A birth altar is a power symbol of your birth, it is a sacred space that you create for recording and reflecting on your intentions for birth. It can become
a focal point while you are in labor, a place to hold your power and a place to collect and remember your sources of strength.
It can be a space where you meditate, using it a a gazing point. Honor the transitions in you as you grow your child by adding, subtracting and refining your birth altar.
To create your birth altar, use a windowsill, dresser or small table. Add items that have special significance to you. Objects that represent strength, power, and perseverance are excellent.
What do you enjoy seeing? What makes you happy to look at? Prayers, words of wisdom, gifts from others, beautiful imagery, nature objects, candles are all items you can incorporate into your altar.
Collect and create images throughout your pregnancy. Create art representing your power as a birthing woman, use crystals or salt bowls to hold your intentions. place prayer flags or affirmations where you can read them. What words do you want to remember while you are in labor?
If you were honored with a mother blessing ceremony you may want to include any beads or objects you may have received.
A birth bundle is something you can create: collect 3 items that represent mother, father and baby and also summons mind, body and spirit. Place these items into a cloth and tie it shut. This bundle can be opened during labor or after as a reminder of this fantastic right of passage.
I have created a fun checklist for you to use:
__A cloth to drape over your chosen space to place your altar
__A large candle: try to find a beeswax one, sometimes you can find them in really cool shapes (like a tree or an owl)
__an item representing fire: candle, bowl of ash, lights
__an item representing wind: chimes, a feather
__an item representing water: fountain, bowl of sea salt, shells
__an item representing earth: moss, twigs, rocks, flowers
__Mala: prayer beads for mediation
__Rose quartz, moonstone or any other crystal you resonate with
__An ojo de dios – these are fun to make and can be a great focal point
__Jar of prayers, rocks or beads from your mother blessing
__Art created by you or others : representing strength and power in birth
__Symbols and imagery of motherhood, birth and pregnancy
__Incense, sweet grass or sage
__Your own special items
