I started with my ink drawing on watercolor paper. I painted layers of leaves in the background, I wanted to play around with layering to create depth. I started with really light leaves, then layered darker ones on top, finally adding a dark green leaf on top of those. I then painted shadows on her skin with blue. (I am learning how to create shadows and highlights on skin with watercolors).
Now I layer a skin tone over the blue shadows and all over her skin.
I add some marks to her shoulders and start adding shadows to her hair with more blue. I have also made an orange with alizarin crimson and lemon yellow.
I think I am going to try using violet to shade the babies skin, to give it a warmer tone. I am not sure I like the blue as a shadow on skin, it is very cooling.
Her hair gets a wash of brown and the womb gets finished in an orange tone.
Yellow is added to the border around the figures and to her halo.
I have laid a layer of violet to the shadows on the babies skin, then layered a wash of skin tone on top. It creates a much warmer skin tone. I add veins to the womb and I have started drawing stars into her halo with black pen.
I decide to add more leaves to the bottom of the figures, to give a better balance to the painting. I add details to the foreground leaves as well.
A close up of the growing baby.
A close-up of the mother’s face.
It is getting closer to being finished, the leaves at the bottom need detailing and the stars in her halo will be painted the same purple that is on the babies skin.
The finished painting 🙂 It is called “Mother Goddess” I was inspired by religious images of holy people with their halos. I was also inspired by a song titled, “Bravitzlana Rubakalva” by Mariee Sioux:
bravitzlana rubakalva, our very own country
oh, there, we have see-through bellies
where we can, where we can
where we can watch all the miracles happening
and we can watch our organs clapping
and we can, and we can
and we can watch our bread dissolving
and we can watch our cells dividing
and we can see our babies floating
and we can watch them form from nothing
sit back and just watch them form from nothing
I have scanned it and tweaked it to look bright and full of color. I have uploaded this to my shop on Society 6. You can get it as an iphone case or a t-shirt or a clock! Go check it out if you like :).
